LAKE ELMO, Minn.—Inside a locked storage container near the Twin Cities, 200 gallons of concentrated PFAS await an executioner. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency harvested the chemicals from a nearby aquifer and has invited companies to demonstrate an array of destructive technologies on samples of the liquid. The goal is to kill the PFAS, which have been linked to cancer and other health problems, by dicing up molecules that have some of the strongest bonds on Earth.

America Is Back in the Factory Business
  + stars: | 2023-04-08 | by ( John Keilman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Production at U.S. factories rose last year, but few things were produced at a more furious pace than factories themselves. Construction spending related to manufacturing reached $108 billion in 2022, Census Bureau data show, the highest annual total on record—more than was spent to build schools, healthcare centers or office buildings.
Stanley Black & Decker executives have spoken in recent months of shrinking the company’s footprint. Stanley Black & Decker Inc. said it is closing factories in Texas and South Carolina, relocating some operations to Tennessee facilities as the company revamps its manufacturing and distribution network. The Connecticut-based tool maker said the moves would affect the jobs of 357 employees. Eighty jobs will be added in Tennessee, the company said.
Gas stoves have drawn scrutiny in recent years after some studies found that they release pollutants that can increase the risk of some health issues. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it would call on companies, scientists and the public to submit research and possible solutions to potential health hazards associated with gas stoves. The request aims to examine the scope and scale of risks associated with using gas ranges, data that can be analyzed and possible solutions, the commission said Wednesday. No regulatory proceeding is being proposed and no ban is under consideration, it said.

DuPont Inc. Chief Executive Edward Breen said that he has agreed with the materials maker’s board to stay in his job after his contract expires at the end of the year. Mr. Breen, who has led DuPont since returning to the company’s top job in February 2020, said investors have frequently asked whether he’ll retire when his contract is up, and that he and the board wanted to take that question off the table.
